{"id":19053,"date":"2024-06-13T11:58:06","date_gmt":"2024-06-13T15:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/illumin.com\/?p=19053"},"modified":"2025-01-30T06:04:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T11:04:10","slug":"is-netflix-joining-the-adtech-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/is-netflix-joining-the-adtech-market\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Netflix joining the AdTech market?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 15 May 2024, during Netflix\u2019s second Upfront presentation to the advertising industry, the company announced it would be dipping its toes into the AdTech market with its very own in-house advertising technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Reinhard, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix\u2019s President of Advertising, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.netflix.com\/en\/news\/netflix-upfront-2024-the-year-of-growth-and-momentum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">red the news<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Netflix is planning to launch this exciting new platform by the end of 2025. Its AdTech platform aims to give advertisers better insights, measurement, and buying capabilities than Netflix currently provides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This move comes after a year of continued ad growth on the platform. Netflix\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/amazon-prime-switchs-to-ad-supported\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ad-supported plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> created momentum in 2023, with a total of 40 million subscribers as of May 2024. This has grown from just 5 million users a year ago. Additionally, 40% of all new signups in ad-inclusive regions are on the ad-supported plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reinhard says: \u201cBringing our AdTech in-house will allow us to power the ads plan with the same level of excellence that\u2019s made Netflix the leader in streaming technology today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until now, Microsoft was Netflix\u2019s main <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/guide-programmatic-advertising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">programmatic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> partner. This is changing too as the company expands its buying capabilities to include Google\u2019s Display and Video 360, Magnite, and others. These partnerships should <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adexchanger.com\/ad-exchange-news\/thursday-06072023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lessen Netflix\u2019s reliance on Microsoft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while it builds its new in-house platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of improving measurement, the company also unveiled new partnerships. It is now working with iSpot and TVision in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adexchanger.com\/tv\/netflix-announces-new-ad-measurement-options-ahead-of-the-upfronts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addition to the partnerships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it announced last month with Kantar, Cint, and NCSolutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix is working hard to compete in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/over-the-top-ott-booming\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing OTT market<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, improving its features to attract more clients. According to Reinhard, the company is &#8220;incredibly strategic about how [it] presents ads because we want our members to have a phenomenal experience. We conduct deep consumer research to make sure we stay ahead of the competition, bringing opportunities that are better for members and better for brands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumor becomes reality<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix previously alluded to launching in-house AdTech, but has never provided more than sparse details. This time the company was clear and set itself a deadline. Netflix\u2019s proprietary AdTech platform will launch by next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The streaming giant is pushing forward, testing its new platform in Canada in 2024 with plans to launch in the US by Q2 2025. Rumors have solidified into concrete goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This platform will give Netflix more control over ad buying and measurement on its platform, giving it as much control over its AdTech as it has over its streaming tech.
