Set an alarm for 7AM.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hey Google, turn off the lights.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexa, what\u2019s the name of this song<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have heard somebody utter these statements recently or something along these lines. You may even have said them yourself at one point. Smart devices (such as Google Home and Amazon Echo) and virtual assistants (like Siri and Alexa) have changed the way users interact with their devices and ultimately, opened the world up to new possibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such possibilities include opportunities for the integration of voice-activated technology in advertising. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/audio-advertising-the-ultimate-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audio advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t something new. It has been around for a while and comes in different forms such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/take-advantage-of-podcast-advertising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">podcast advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it hasn\u2019t reached its full potential, as there are still facets of audio advertising that have yet to be utilized to its full extent, such as voice-activated ads or voice-enabled ads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Devices and technology capable of streaming audio content are highly accessible to consumers and its rate of consumption is growing. That said, marketers are starting to see the potential of interactive audio ads to engage users in more ways as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/audience-targeting-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">target new audiences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they want to acquire.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Voice-activated ads at a glance<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/power-voice-how-voice-enabled-advertising-revolutionizing-user\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice-activated advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or voice-enabled advertising) refers to the usage of voice technology to deliver ads to users. Consumers would hear audio ads that are delivered through voice assistants or smart speakers, typically activated by voice commands or integrated into existing content (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/sounding-off-on-podcast-advertising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">podcasts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or music streaming services).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of interactive audio advertising works by using natural language processing (NLP) to understand user requests and deliver ads. Consumers interact with the voice-activated technology through which the device records the audio and sends it to a server for analysis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The server then uses NLP algorithms to identify the user\u2019s intent and then delivers an appropriate ad in response. As a result, we have <\/span><b>interactive voice advertising<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advertisingweek.com\/how-interactive-audio-ads-can-help-brands-reach-and-inspire-audiences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ad interactivity options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include interactive audio ads where customers interact or engage with the ad with a simple voice command. This could be through the ad\u2019s call-to-action (CTA) where users can input a voice request to add to a cart or respond to the ad \u2013 the device completes the request without disrupting the streaming audio content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another interactivity option is through branded experiences. These are longer-form experiences users can engage with using their voice. The experiences let brands start a dialogue with customers, offering a variety of paths and engagement options (such as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.effectv.com\/autoshowroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voice-based car showroom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice-enabled ads are a form of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/guide-programmatic-advertising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">programmatic audio advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it is a digital ad placed in an audio form that uses algorithmic buying to automate and streamline the ad insertion and selling process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Examples of voice-enabled ads<\/h2>\n<h3>Estee Lauder uses voice-activated marketing for its serum<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cosmetics company Estee Lauder launched a voice-activated digital audio campaign called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingdive.com\/news\/estee-lauder-lets-spotify-listeners-order-samples-on-google-home\/587985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSend Me a Sample\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to launch its Advanced Night Repair serum. Spotify and Google Home users had a chance to receive a free sample of the serum when they said \u201cSend me a sample\u201d at the end of the audio ad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Burger King triggers voice-enabled technology devices in its Whopper ad<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in 2017, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/4\/12\/15259400\/burger-king-google-home-ad-wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burger King<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched a 15-second ad that featured users saying \u201cOK Google, what is the Whopper burger?\u201d This phrase would trigger the Google Home devices of those listening to the ad (and in turn, read the Wikipedia entry for Burger King\u2019s iconic Whopper). The ad gained widespread attention, highlighting the early potential of voice-activated advertising.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Downton Abbey movie&#8217;s promotion through Amazon Alexa<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.focusfeatures.com\/article\/downton-abbey-a-new-era_amazon-alexa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus Features<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched an exciting \u201cchoose your own adventure\u201d branded experience called \u201cThe Downton Abbey: A New Era\u201d using Amazon\u2019s Alexa. Users could activate the experience via a voice command of \u201cAlexa, launch the Downton Abbey experience.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would guide listeners through a voice-based experience that provided them with the option of participating in trivia, a behind-the-scenes tour, or purchasing tickets for the movie.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The value of voice-activated advertising<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice-activated ads offer a lot of value and potential for brands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/about-npr\/1105579648\/npr-edison-research-smart-speaker-ownership-reaches-35-of-americans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR and Edison Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that 53% of smart speaker owners who have heard an ad on their device say they would respond to ads on their smart speaker. Additionally, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost half of the smart speaker owners who listened to ads say that \u2013 compared to hearing an ad in another place \u2013 a smart speaker would make them more likely to consider the brand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means brands can achieve a much <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/partner-articles\/how-interactive-ads-are-shaking-up-audio-ad-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher engagement rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ROI if consumers are more likely to respond well to ads they can interact with through voice commands or voice-activated technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice-enabled ads also bring a better, seamless user experience. Since users interact with voice assistants and smart speakers in a conversational manner, voice-activated ads can integrate easily into the user&#8217;s experience. Specifically, brands can connect with listeners by facilitating a voice response with more information. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also lets consumers engage with the ads hands-free while performing activities like cooking or exercising. That means ads are delivered to consumers with little to no interruption to their user experience or everyday activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice-enabled advertising also allows for more personalized ads based on the user&#8217;s preferences and behavior. Take, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/7\/23\/21334484\/pandora-interactive-voice-ads-voice-mode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pandora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After initial testing in 2019, the music streaming service expanded more on its voice control features with the addition of voice-activated ads. Only listeners who already hear ads will be offered the voice-activated ones, which ask the listener to agree to hear additional content (users must actively say \u201cyes\u201d to initiate).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, this can lead to higher conversion rates and a better return on investment for advertisers because brands get their message across to consumers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another benefit to voice-activated ads is their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpushup.com\/blog\/what-is-programmatic-audio-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resistance to ad blocking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ad-blocking tools have not yet invaded the digital audio space. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are only designed to target visual display ads,\u00a0 audio-based campaigns can quickly resolve this growing problem.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, voice-activated ads have a high chance of accurately targeting and advertising to their users without running the risk of ad blockers and disruption of user experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice-activated advertising (and interactive audio ads in general) offers a refreshing and engaging type of user experience.
