Meta says it must be labeled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketers relying on AI-generated content for their social media could find themselves in hot water in 2024. Meta\u2019s top policy executive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/meta-labelling-ai-generated-images-from-open-ai-google-1.7106050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced on February 5, 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that it will require all users to label AI-generated audio and visual content on its platforms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The social media giant\u2019s long-term goal is to develop technology to detect and label all AI-created content on its platform internally. But, until that technology becomes a reality, it requires users to label the content themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Clegg, the company&#8217;s president of global affairs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/meta-start-labeling-ai-generated-images-companies-like-openai-google-2024-02-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during an interview with Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, said: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Even though the technology is not yet fully mature, particularly when it comes to audio and video, the hope is that we can create a sense of momentum and incentive for the rest of the industry to follow.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clegg did not specify what penalties Meta would implement for violating this policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This announcement came after a wave of generative AI scandals in 2023. Sports Illustrated was just one of several publications landing itself in hot water for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2023\/nov\/28\/sports-illustrated-ai-writers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using AI to write content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The public reaction to AI-generated content shows readers value a human touch; using<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/ai-for-creatives-and-content\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> AI to create content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes with its pitfalls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These scandals pave the way for tech companies, like Meta, to write policies requiring the labeling of generative AI. Public backlash proved the necessity for businesses to distinguish between AI and human-created content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meta states: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the difference between human and synthetic content gets blurred, people want to know where the boundary lies.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meta further adds: &#8220;People often come across AI-generated content for the first time and our users have told us they appreciate transparency around this new technology.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI-generated content to be labeled on Meta going forward<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As generative AI becomes harder to distinguish, internet users are becoming wary and Meta is looking to ease their worries. But it\u2019s not just user contentment on the line \u2013 there are broader political implications to some AI capabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep Fakes have also become a major concern for celebrities and <a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/what-executive-order-on-ai-means\/\">politicians of all stripes<\/a>. The technology has been used to maliciously create images of public figures, in some cases opening users up to defamation lawsuits.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a strategic move on Meta\u2019s part to try to remove themselves from this equation, saying: \u201cWe must help people [distinguish] when photorealistic content they\u2019re seeing has been created using AI.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to requiring users to label AI-generated content, it will apply \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2024\/02\/labeling-ai-generated-images-on-facebook-instagram-and-threads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagined with AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d labels to images users create with its Meta AI feature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the future, the company will also look for ways to label all AI materials themselves, removing any room for user error.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a challenge. Although some AI companies are starting to include signals in their image generators, these signals are insufficient.
