{"id":17424,"date":"2023-11-10T13:52:45","date_gmt":"2023-11-10T17:52:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/illumin.com\/?p=17424"},"modified":"2025-01-30T06:06:10","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T11:06:10","slug":"pulling-the-thread-on-threads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/pulling-the-thread-on-threads\/","title":{"rendered":"Pulling the thread on Threads: Meta\u2019s new social network four months in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once dubbed the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/sci-tech\/what-is-threads-here-s-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-potential-twitter-killer-1.6469367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter Killer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, Threads launched in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/07\/introducing-threads-new-app-text-sharing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">July 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with high expectations. In the midst of leadership controversy, the new app was slated by many to replace Twitter, (recently rebranded as X). But where is the <a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/history-of-social-media-marketing\/\">social network<\/a> now? And where is it likely to go in the coming months?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Built by the team at Instagram, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/07\/introducing-threads-new-app-text-sharing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced on July 5 of 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Threads came onto the social media scene as a new way to engage in conversations and keep up with the latest trends via text updates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new app would be accessed through existing Instagram accounts and posts would be limited with 500 characters. Users could also post short videos, photos, and even include links (which notably cannot be done on Instagram).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Threads launched to some degree of fan fare with tens of thousands of new users signing up on day one &#8211; the app drew in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/content-na1.emarketer.com\/threads-struggles-retain-users-after-its-explosive-start-don-t-count-yet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 million users in its first five days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But since then, it seems that the sheen has worn off and usership isn\u2019t growing as quickly as one would expect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Threads started a slow decline quite quickly after its initial launch. Threads\u2019 engagement has dropped by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2023\/08\/15\/threads-engagement-has-tanked-79-do-industry-leaders-think-it-can-rebound\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a whopping 79%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since July.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17427\" src=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-10-18-at-1.04.50-PM-300x258.png\" alt=\"Threads screenshot\" width=\"600\" height=\"517\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-10-18-at-1.04.50-PM-300x258.png 300w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-10-18-at-1.04.50-PM-1024x882.png 1024w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-10-18-at-1.04.50-PM-768x661.png 768w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-10-18-at-1.04.50-PM.png 1282w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand why Threads is in the position it&#8217;s in, it&#8217;s important to understand why users signed up in the first place. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1416617\/gen-z-us-reasons-downloading-threads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statista survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from July 2023, a total of 40.1 percent of Gen Z US Threads users downloaded the app \u201cbecause they thought it looked fun\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, according to the same survey, 38.7% downloaded the app purely to try a new platform, and another quarter because they noticed their friends or family were signing up. Notably, one in five new Threads users in July downloaded the app as a direct alternative to X (Twitter).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, in order to clamor back usership, Threads has to fill these needs and meet user expectations. While challenging, that should be more than doable for a company as large as <a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/meta-advertising-what-you-need-to-know\/\">Meta<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Where Threads can go from here<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until recently, Threads was relegated to mobile use, but the network has recently changed that. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/07\/introducing-threads-new-app-text-sharing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In late August<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company was rolling out a <a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/meta-advertising-trends-2024\/\">web experience for Threads<\/a>, meaning users can now access Threads in their web browser of choice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company is also working on other updates. For example, Meta is currently testing keyword search on Threads in the Australian and New Zealand markets. It is also rolling out keyword search inSpanish (alongside English &#8211; covering the two most used languages in the company\u2019s target audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, Instagram is holding several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/content-na1.emarketer.com\/threads-will-hold-influencer-focus-groups-bid-reignite-engagement?_gl=1*31qjw2*_ga*MzE0NTE3ODY5LjE2ODkwOTUxNjU.*_ga_XXYLHB9SXG*MTY5NzQ4MDIxOS4zMi4xLjE2OTc0ODAyMjYuMC4wLjA.*_gcl_au*OTM4MzgxMTA1LjE2OTc0ODAyMTkuNjMwNzE0NTk4LjE2OTc0ODAyMjUuMTY5NzQ4MDIyNQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this autumn, engaging with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/the-power-of-digital-content-creators\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital creators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to better understand how to woo new users and build the app into a social media staple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These updates, along with a slow, but predictable growth, give analysts hope that the app might just still become a social media staple. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chart-na1.emarketer.com\/264246\/us-threads-users-2023-2025-millions-change-of-instagram-users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eMarketer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Treads users are continuing to climb steadily, in pact with new Instagram users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17428\" src=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/InsiderIntelligence-us-threads-users-2023-2025-millions-change-of-instagram-users-283172-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"US Threads users\" width=\"600\" height=\"598\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/InsiderIntelligence-us-threads-users-2023-2025-millions-change-of-instagram-users-283172-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/InsiderIntelligence-us-threads-users-2023-2025-millions-change-of-instagram-users-283172-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/InsiderIntelligence-us-threads-users-2023-2025-millions-change-of-instagram-users-283172-768x766.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/InsiderIntelligence-us-threads-users-2023-2025-millions-change-of-instagram-users-283172.jpeg 922w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside this slow, but steady growth, new improvements to the platforms have the potential to boost Threads to the level of its competitors. By working on adding and improving product features, as well as improving privacy (which has stifled the platform&#8217;s growth in major regions like the EU), Meta is likely going to see growth from their new platform in the coming years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest hurdles is going to be loyalty and personal habits.
