But how did we get here? Why has CTV taken off the way it has and how can understanding the history of CTV advertising help advertisers predict where it will go next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are CTV ads?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/guide-connected-television-ctv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connected TV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often shortened to CTV, refers to streamed video content. This content is streamed through smart TVs, connected devices (such as Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Chromecast, and Apple TV), gaming consoles, smartphones, tablets, and other computing devices. The content can be provided by large streamers like Netflix or Disney+, local broadcasters, or user-generated content sites like YouTube or Vimeo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The invention and continued development of these apps, devices, and platforms have given consumers a new way to engage with TV shows. Simultaneously, it has also given advertisers a new method to communicate with customers along their buying journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its development, CTV has become the technical core for <a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/guide-programmatic-advertising\/\">programmatic TV<\/a> (PTV) and it differs from linear TV in that there is no set time that audiences are watching. Viewers can watch content at their own will &#8211; when they want, where they want, and for as long as they want. This is what has made CTV so desirable for audiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where did streaming start?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might feel like streaming only began a few short years ago &#8211; but the roots of CTV were sewn as early as the 1990s. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/streaming-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-ever live-streamed event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a Severe Tire Damage concert in 1993, an American garage rock band. This was the first of several experimental, and little-watched, events broadcast online in the 90s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe Tire Damage scored this gig thanks to its drummer, Mark Weiser, who worked at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. This center is where \u201cmulticast backbone\u201d, also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/4743\/multicast-backbone-mbone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MBone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, technology was developed in an attempt to make large-scale streaming possible. The concert was broadcast by Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre in order to prove that their new MBone technology worked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with its small audience, the show was considered a success and in 1994 The Rolling Stones <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/11\/22\/arts\/rolling-stones-live-on-internet-both-a-big-deal-and-a-little-deal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broadcast their own gig<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a larger crowd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While MBone equipment was a success, it wasn\u2019t capable of what streaming can do today and only allowed 200 or so computers to stream an event at a time. But what MBone was able to do is start the ball rolling, encouraging other companies to invest in the development of better streaming technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the companies to follow suit with investing in streaming tech was RealNetworks, which in 1995 launched RealAudio Player, later renamed RealPlayer when video streaming was added to the application.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2000, RealPlayer had 215 million users. This accounted for a whopping 85% of the early streaming market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the technology was available, the floodgates were open. In 2005, one of the most popular streaming sites of all time, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/YouTube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was born. YouTube was the first video-streaming site to capture the public zeitgeist, bringing in millions of viewers and revolutionizing online content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2007, just two years later, the video rental company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Netflix-Inc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, entered the streaming game with the debut of their wildly successful video-on-demand service.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17274\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17274\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17274\" src=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Netflix-in-2007-300x200.png\" alt=\"Netflix in 2007\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Netflix-in-2007-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Netflix-in-2007-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Netflix-in-2007-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Netflix-in-2007.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A screenshot of Netflix&#8217;s website in 2007<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As technology grew and streaming became faster and higher quality, more and more users started to consider streaming sites like Netflix as an ideal way to watch TV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 marked a turning point in the streaming world. For years, YouTube and Netflix held a near-monopoly on <a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/advertise-on-streaming-services\/\">streaming TV<\/a>, but with its launch in 2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewaltdisneycompany.com\/disney-launches-today-and-a-new-era-of-disney-entertainment-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disney+<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posed the first real challenge to these established players. Not only that, but services like Amazon Prime Video began creating shows capable of competing with Netflix\u2019s previously higher-quality content, prompting more and more networks to explore the option of creating their own streaming services leading to services such as Hulu, Max, Shudder, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This era of streaming is known as the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/streaming-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">streaming wars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d And is the era we find ourselves in today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of streaming and CTV ads<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the continued increase in streaming quality and availability, more users are opting to \u201ccut the cable\u201d and cancel their traditional TV subscriptions. And according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/18\/business\/media\/streaming-hollywood-revolution.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cable subscribers have been declining at a rate of up to 5.4% a quarter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until now, cable TV has been a major source of income for the entertainment industry, and that ad revenue needs to be recouped. This comes as streaming services are realizing a gap in their own income stream, with many unable to generate sufficient income from subscription fees alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most reasonable solutions for both of these problems has been to introduce advertisements into streaming content. This is welcome news for entertainment companies and advertisers alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/03\/04\/disney-is-getting-an-ad-supported-subscription-tier-later-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disney+<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced its ad-supported subscription tier in 2022 and Netflix was close on its heals. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/forbescommunicationscouncil\/2022\/06\/17\/why-streaming-platforms-are-accelerating-their-plans-for-an-advertising-model-now\/?sh=3557ac807b83\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forbes Councils Member Dallas Lawrence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe cracks in the Netflix <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no-ads-ever<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wall grew into full-blown fissures\u201d and the streaming giant conceded to creating an ad-supported, budget friendly subscription alongside its controversial ban on password sharing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ad-supported model has also been welcomed by some consumers, who are looking to spend less rather than more for streaming services as they look to curb expenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so many popular streaming services welcoming advertisers to their platforms, now is the time for marketers to invest in CTV advertising.
