Since then, they have had to increase their estimates in subsequent reports. This is due to a booming performance on social networks &#8211; in particular Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. This growth leads forecasters to predict continued preference for social within the programmatic space going forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Haggstron, an eMarketer forecasting analyst, says that \u201cadvertising in a cookie-free mobile app environment where users spend much of their digital time is complicated and difficult. Social networks prove to be the major exception. They\u2019ve made it relatively easy to target audiences at scale in an in-app environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why is it that so many advertisers are including social media in their programmatic strategy? And should you be as well?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is social media programmatic?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/guide-programmatic-advertising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Programmatic advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lets marketers automate several aspects of the digital ad buying process through the use of new and evolving technologies. It can be used to target specific audiences, to geo-target, or to take advantage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/cross-channel-advertising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cross-channel marketing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across on video, mobile, display, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/guide-connected-television-ctv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connected Television<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CTV), and on social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the USA this year, marketers will spend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insiderintelligence.com\/content\/more-than-half-of-us-programmatic-digital-display-ad-dollars-go-to-social-networks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than $57 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on digital display advertising and media buying. More than half of this will be on social platforms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, in 2019, 56.3% of the $57 billion that was spent on programmatic ads went to social networks. By using a programmatic approach, advertisers can allocate more time to audience research, strategy development, content creation, and other marketing priorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased control and transparency<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Programmatic social advertising also lets marketers maintain control of ad purchases and target audiences. They are also able to do so with a greater amount of precision. This is because programmatic approaches provide visibility into the success and performance campaigns while helping to identify the most effective strategies and tactics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better targeting, broader reach<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, programmatic advertising easily enables precise <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/audience-targeting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">targeting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/guides\/personas-101-a-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">personas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and social media users based on a wide range of behaviors and characteristics.
