With such a big shift in the way people keep in touch, it\u2019s hard to imagine that this medium is less than twenty years old. That\u2019s because the groundwork for today\u2019s social media was laid years before the apps and platforms of today made their debut.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Facebook may be only 19 as of 2023, the very first use of the internet to socialize dates all the way back to 1978 with the creation of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/byte-magazine-1978-11-rescan\/page\/n151\/mode\/1up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computerized Hobbyists Bulletin Board System<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We can only imagine the hilarity of text-based memes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how did social media make the climb from a simple chat room, to becoming the major player in advertising that it is today?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emergence of social media\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history of social media starts, as mentioned above, in 1978 with the creation of the Computerized Hobbyists Bulletin Board System. This digital bulletin board\u2019s popularity, alongside increasing modem speed, led to the creation of over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/social-media-history\/462643\/#close\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1000 similar systems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17105\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17105\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17105\" src=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/CBBS-300x142.jpeg\" alt=\"CBBS\" width=\"600\" height=\"285\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/CBBS-300x142.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/CBBS-768x364.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/CBBS.jpeg 797w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A Computerized Hobbyists Bulletin Board System<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This ground work is what led to the emergence of more recognizable social platforms in the 1990\u2019s. In 1992, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techland.time.com\/2012\/07\/06\/aols-longest-running-employee-on-the-history-of-aol-chat-rooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">America Online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched, known more commonly as AOL. AOL grew exponentially and by 1995 had an estimated 3 million users worldwide (thanks to an aggressive floppy disk campaign spanning years), interacting through email, forums, and chat rooms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While several chat platforms launched and grew in popularity in this time (ICQ, MSN Messenger, Jabber, etc) they focused solely on chat and not the social media aspects of those that followed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1997, sites dedicated solely to social networking launched \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/then-and-now-a-history-of-social-networking-sites\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six Degrees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/bolt-inc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bolt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six Degrees was founded by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mixergy.com\/interviews\/andrew-weinreich-sixdegrees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Weinreich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who is often credited as the \u201cfather of social media,\u201d in order to help people create connections and meet new people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17106\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17106\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17106\" src=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Six-Degrees-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"Six Degrees\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Six-Degrees-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/illumin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Six-Degrees.jpeg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A screenshot of the Six Degrees login page<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bolt was designed by Dan Pelson to give teenagers a dedicated space to connect with other teens through email, voice mail, chat, and message boards. The new millennia brought with it better home computers, which meant more homes had a personal PC and more users flocked to the internet for new and exciting ways to socialize.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2002, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20030831075248\/http:\/\/friendster.com\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friendster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched as \u201can online community that connects people through networks of friends for dating or making new friends.\u201d This new platform was quickly followed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/myspace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MySpace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.linkedin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2003.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The once famous MySpace was the ultimate spot for teens and young adults to gather online \u2013 ranking friends, publishing blogs, customizing profiles, and sharing photos and music. MySpace marked a shift in social media into the mainstream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn was an equally big development, with the networking site remaining the primary professional space online today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The early 2000s also saw the birth of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/facebook-launches-mark-zuckerberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2004 (originally launched as Thefacebook). Facebook\u2019s popularity quickly exploded and moved far beyond the Harvard campus it was meant to serve, becoming the biggest social network of the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was followed in 2006 with the creation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and later by the 2010 launch of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4408374\/instagram-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The birth of paid social<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the rise of social media came the birth of social media marketing. Social media companies need to make money in order to operate and since usership on these sites is free, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/all-social-media-ads-monsoor-shuvo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social ads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a critical part of their business model.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As early as 2002, social media sites were using advertising to target specific demographics on their platforms and between 2005 and 2006 Facebook introduced its own advertising platform. This let advertisers easily target Facebook users based on age, location, and interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter and YouTube also both introduced ad options shortly after their founding, with YouTube even making a partnership program in order to share a portion of its ad revenue with creators. In 2007 to 2008 Twitter also introduced Promoted Tweets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoted Tweets changed the game, giving advertisers a subtle way to boost their own messaging while blending in with the rest of the site&#8217;s content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram introduced its own advertising options in 2013, a full three years after the app first launched.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, advertising options have continued to evolve on each of the major platforms, and on new platforms that capture the public imagination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook has created sponsored stories, carousel ads, and Custom Audiences, LinkedIn introduced LinkedIn Ads, Instagram introduced video ads and story ads \u2013 each social platform has continued to evolve their ad options as their platform has grown and changed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has given marketers new tools to reach the almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/social-media-statistics\/480507\/#:~:text=Social%20Media%20Statistics%20Worldwide,increase%20year%2Dover%2Dyear.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.8 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> social media users across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media marketing today\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media is continuing to evolve and with it, social media marketing. Today, there are three main ways that brands reach audiences through social media:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/best-paid-social-ads-of-2023-so-far\/\"><b>Paid social: <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paid social refers to paid promotion on social media sites. This can be through ads or sponsored posts.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Social posts: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brands can also engage on social media by creating their own social posts in order to generate organic traffic.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/the-power-of-digital-content-creators\/\"><b>Influencer marketing<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Influencer marketing refers to partnerships made with popular social media users. These users, also known as influencers can share or promote your product or service, acting both as an ad and a testimonial.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of paid social, new ad formats and targeting options are regularly introduced, so it&#8217;s critical that marketers stay on top of the options available to them in order to get the most for their ad-spend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is equally important for marketers to be aware of the latest changes to the social landscape, including the launch of new platforms (like Threads) and major changes to existing players (like Twitter&#8217;s recent rebrand to X, and new advertising rules).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/finding-the-latest-social-media-trends\/\">Social trends and technology<\/a> both constantly change; it makes sense that <a href=\"https:\/\/illumin.com\/insights\/blog\/how-to-build-the-best-social-strategy\/\">social media marketing<\/a> is constantly changing as well.
